Week of 5/4 - 5/8

Math: Over the last few weeks, we finished up the new SOLs that we had not learned before the school closure.  These were 5.11 Elapsed Time, 5.18 Patterns, and 5.19 Variable Expressions.  This week and for the remainder of the year, we will be completing review material in the 5th Grade Math Review Packet.
In each section of the review packet, you will see the SOL number listed for that section.  I included notes in your packet to help you, so you can review them if you need to using the SOL number.  For example, under Week 1, you will see the bubble that contains questions 1-5.  At the top, you will see it says SOL 5.4 and 5.7.  You could look up SOL 5.4 and 5.7 in the notes to refresh your memory on how to complete these type of problems.
Please feel free to contact me if you need help.  It's been a while since we learned some of this material.  I will be glad to answer any questions that come up while you are completing this review.
Packet: In the 5th Grade Math Review Packet, complete Weeks 1, 2, and 3.
Portaportal: Practice activities on 5.2 Compare Fractions and Decimals and 5.9 Metric Measurement.
IXL: Complete any unfinished activities for the following with an 80% or higher: 5.2a Convert Between Fractions and Decimals-G.12 and G.14

5th Grade Math Review Packet Answer Key.pdf (Here is the key so you can check your child's progress when sections are completed.  Students, make sure you complete the work on your own BEFORE your parent checks you with the answer key, then correct any problems you may have missed.)
The following have been posted before, but I am including them again in case you need them so it will be easy to find.  This is the exact same information that is in the packet and that will be posted in the Google Classroom.  As a reminder, you only need to send back the feedback sheet.  You can do it each week or at the end, whatever works best for your family.  You can upload it in Google Classroom or you can take a picture and email it to me at [email protected]

Week of 4/13 - 4/17

Hello, Happy Easter and Spring Break! I will not be assigning anything new this week for Math and Word Study. You will notice that I also put this on the suggested schedule. If you want to continue working, do whatever works for you and your family. I will check my email periodically, so if you have any questions or need anything just let me know. Enjoy your family time and make as many memories as you can!

Week of 4/6 - 4/10

Math: This week our focus is Elapsed Time, which is an SOL that was not covered before the closure.  Most of you will remember that you learned elapsed time in 4th grade for a 12 hour period.  In 5th grade we learn about elapsed time for a 24 hour period.  You just have to be careful about changing a.m. and p.m. if you cross over 12 noon or 12 midnight.
Portaportal: Practice 5.11 Elapsed Time activities.
IXL: Practice 5.11 Elapsed Time by completing Y.4 and Y.5
Packet: You will find the 5.11 Elapsed Time packet in your folder that you received from school.  Complete this packet this week and fill in your feedback sheet for how many you got right on your own and then how many you got right after corrections.  You can fill in your feedback sheet on Google classroom or you can print it, take a picture and then email it to me (or just email me your results).  I have the packet and feedback sheet here also (along with a suggested schedule and tips you may find helpful):

Word Study: For the rest of the year we will focus on prefixes, suffixes, and roots.  Below you will find the Word Study packet.  This week your focus should be to complete Lessons 2.9 Prefixes pages 102 and 103.  You will complete your feedback on the same sheet as math.

5th Grade Word Study Review Packet.pdf

Suggested Word Study Time Daily: 10-20 minutes

Week of 3/30 - 4/3

Math: This week I would like for you to review SOL 5.5, which is problem solving with decimal numbers.
Portaportal: Practice 5.5 Decimal Problem Solving
IXL: 5.5a-Add, Subtract, Multiply, Divide Decimal Numbers (H.3, I.4, J.3, O.7)  and 5.5b-Problem Solving with Decimals (H.4, I.5, J.5, O.8).  Your goal is to score 80% or higher in these areas.  I will be checking on IXL to see how you progress and give you feedback.
Decimal Work: Find a store flyer from somewhere like Food Lion, Krogers, or Walmart.  You can find these in a newspaper or sometimes you get them in the mail.  You can also look online for these.  If you have a budget of $20, see how many items you can add together to get close to $20, but don't go over this amount.  Then, do this again if you have a budget for $100.  Parents, we have found that many students struggle with understanding how to write and say money amounts.  This is an important life skill that they should practice often.  It might even be helpful if you practice showing your student how to balance a checkbook.
Suggested time for math daily: 20-30 minutes

Spelling: Students in the 5th grade are required to know prefixes.  As you are reading this week, make a list of words that you find that have the prefixes re, pre, and un.  Let's see who can find the most words by Friday!

These assignments will also be posted to our Google Classroom.  Please post your decimal work and prefix list to the Google Classroom.

Week of 3/23 - 3/27

Math: Go onto my math portaportal or IXL and practice 5.1 Rounding and 5.2 Fractions and Decimals.  Suggested time daily: 20-30 minutes.

Reading: Practice reading skills A.1 and J.1 on IXL or practice Reading on Epic Books, or pick a book of your choice  Suggested time daily 20-30 minutes.

History/Science: Practice 5.2 Sound and 5.3 Light for Science or USI.8 Westward Expansion and USI.9 Civil War for HIstory on portaportal.  Suggested time daily: 20-30 minutes.
