Science: This week I would like for you to continue to review SOLs 5.2 and 5.3, which are on light and sound.

  • Go to 5.3 Light.  Complete the quiz links for that section.

  • Go to 5.2 Sound.  Complete the quiz links for that section.

• IXL: Properties of Objects (A. 1) and Heat and Thermal Energy (C. 1, 2, 3) Your goal is to score 80% or higher in these areas. I will be checking on IXL to see how you progress and give you feedback. (These are review topics that will help as you do the thinking map below.)

• Once you have gone through some of the links for each section, make a thinking map that compares and contrasts light and sound. How are these two concepts alike and how are they different? (Think about their waves, how fast each travels, what types of materials they can travel through, etc.)

• Create a list of all of the different types of light waves that we discussed. Give specific examples of where these light waves could be found. How are you using light waves while you are at home? We did not discuss sound waves very much yet, but see if you can, come up with a list for sound waves too. 

  • *If you have internet access, put this list in the google classroom assignment. I will be looking at the lists to see what you came up with.*

History: This week, I would like for you to continue to review SOL 5.8, which is on Westward Expansion.

  • Go to USI8 Westward Expansion.  Read Overland Trails and the biography for kids links.

  • After reading, draw a map to show where the Oregon trail is located versus where the Santa Fe trail is located. Using a different thinking map from the one you chose in science, compare and contrast these two trails and how the people felt as they traveled these trails.

  • After reading the biographies, choose one of the historical figures and draw a picture that shows important parts of his or her life. Ex. Susan B. Anthony was born in Massachusetts, so I may draw an outline of that state somewhere in my picture. She was involved in women’s suffrage (women getting to vote), so I might draw a voting booth or a woman casting her vote. Draw as many things about your person as you can. Try to fill up your paper. 

• IXL: Early 19th Century American History (H.1, 2, 3, 4). Your goal is to score 80% or higher in these areas. I will be checking on IXL to see how you progress and give you feedback.

  • Feel free to complete other sections under fifth grade social studies, if you finish all of these early.

• We have discussed primary and secondary sources. We looked at a few primary sources when studying explorers and the American Revolution. The events that we are currently experiencing are new events in history. One day people will want to study this time period to learn about how people lived during this time. I want you to start a journal that could one day be studied by historians who want to learn about our time period (2020). Write the date to start your entry, then write at least a paragraph describing what is happening in your life right now. Write about how you feel, what you do to entertain yourself, what your family members are doing, what you like about being at home and what you don’t like, etc. You can make a short entry daily or you could write an entry once a week. This can be handwritten in a notebook or you could type it in a google doc. This can be a personal journal if you don’t want to share right now or if you would like to share it with me, you can. I would be happy to read it. Remember that one day someone might find this and read it, so use appropriate capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
